On June 1st, we crossed into Canada and made our way north through New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. We traveled the Cabot Trail around Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia before arriving in North Sydney to board the ferry to Newfoundland. Crossing on Sunday night, we started exploring the island with enthusiasm. Working our way from the SW coast up the Great Northern Peninsula, we passed by jaw-dropping beautiful scenery around every turn.
| | Through New Brunswick and Nova Scotia We had a schedule to get to North Sydney in time for our ferry trip on Sunday night, June 7th. So, we had to choose what sights to see as we made our way through New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. We chose a route north that gave us a short time by the Bay of Fundy before entering Nova Scotia. Setting aside 2 days to make the circuit of Cape Breton called the Cabot Trail, we began to get a taste of the dramatic scenery that might await us in Newfoundland. We arrived in North Sydney a couple of days before the ferry would depart. |
| | Exploring Newfoundland’s Southwest Coast We had an uneventful ferry crossing into Port Aux Basque Newfoundland on the night of the 7th. We took the first few days to explore this southwest coast of the island, including Rose Blanche, Our Lady of Mercy Cathedral in Port au Port and the Governor’s Stairway in Lark Harbor. |
| | Gros Morne National Park South Moving further north, we began traveling up the Great Northern Peninsula on Newfoundland’s northwest coast. Our first stop was the southern portion of Gros Morne National Park, hiking the Tablelands and walking on the earth’s mantle. |
| | .The Viking Trail Leaving Gros Morne South, we headed all the way to the northern tip of the peninsula in pursuit of icebergs – and our captain delivered on that promise. Next it was a visit to the site where Norse people landed on North America almost 1000 years ago. |
It had only been a week in Newfoundland, but it was delivering on all we had hoped already. Our next stop would be the other half of the province – Labrador
