Our travels in Newfoundland continued eastward from Twillingate as July began. In the process, we learned the unique histories of many small coastal communities, traveled inland to learn the amazing story behind Gander, hiked some trails in Terra Nova National Park, and saw lots of puffins.
Road to the Shore
We traveled north and east to the Kittiwake Coast, where sandy beaches were the norm, unlike the rest of Newfoundland. These small towns all have their stories to tell, from a tragic plane crash that took the life of a famous doctor to the history of the Barbour family and their domination of the local codfishing and sealing industry in the last century. We drank tea at Ida’s place and saw where the continents broke apart half a billion years ago.
Gander – The Town the Airport Built
Turning back to the island’s interior, we spent several days in Gander and learned of the significance of its airport to the history of aviation and, more recently, to the amazing story of friendship and hospitality during the aftermath of 9/11.
Terra Nova National Park
This forested park along the shores of Newman sound offered miles of hikes, but we had time for only a few of them.
Bonavista
Heading back to the coast, we drove north to the tip of the Bonavista peninsula, where we saw lots of puffins, learned the day-to-day life of those involved in codfishing over the centuries and toured a replica of the ship that John Cabot sailed to discover Newfoundland.
A few weeks left
With less than 2 weeks left to explore, we will spend the last of July on the Avalon peninsula and see Newfoundland’s capital, St. John’s.
