Late May - Cross-Country Journey Part 2

PictureDave looks out over the Gastineau Channel en route to Juneau.
Over the course of 11 days, we cruised aboard the Royal Princess to Alaska and back to Seattle. Returning in the middle of Memorial Day Weekend, we flew east to Kansas City and then finished the month visiting with our son and grandson.

We actually visited Ketchikan twice, and what a difference a week made. The weather went from rainny and cold to sunny and mild. The better weather allowed us to explore further into town.
With a midday arrival to Juneau, the morning offered a beautiful trip up the Gastineau Channel. We also discovered some new exhibits at local museums to explore, pacing ourselves much better than we did 12 years ago when we first visited the state capital.
Our dock in Skagway had been damaged by a rock slide 3 years ago, so we had to tender ashore. We found the Skagway City Museum here, which had an exhibit describing the town’s pivotal role during WWII in the construction of the Alaska Highway.
Our tour through Glacier Bay was narrated by an onboard National Park Ranger, interpreting the scenery and the life that calls the bay home.
All good things must come to an end, and so it was with our cruises to Alaska. We docked in Seattle on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend, and made our way to the airport to fly to Kansas City.
We had a couple of days over Memorial Day weekend to explore Kansas City, including the WWI Memorial, Union Station and some very good BBQ.
Kansas City reinstated its street car line in 2016 from the City Market to Union Station, which was a convenient way for us to visit downtown.

On the Tuesday after Memorial Day, we boarded another Amtrak train, the Southwest Chief, to travel 2 hours east to La Plata, where we would meet up with our son and grandson.
We spent the better part of week visiting with our son and grandson in Brookfield MO. The visit ended with a talent show on Saturday night that was a good time.
But it was time to start heading home to the RV in Jacksonville. So, we would board a train back in La Plata that would take us on the 2-day journey home.
